Individuals Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.

Findings released in a leading health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.

"Users buying such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast weight regain when the medication ends," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment weight in about one and a half years.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It was like a switch that goes on and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled an individual.

This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Growing Adoption

Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural management.
