No fewer than thirteen passengers lose their lives and 98 injured in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key government projects.

The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.

“We are going to meticulously determine the reasons behind this accident,” stated the national leader.

The official reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to meet those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the year before. This venture was closely associated with his leadership's economic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both railway systems was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.

However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously sparked significant apprehensions over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had two non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the construction and operation of these vital projects.
